International
Women's Day will see it's centenary in 2011. In many countries
it is a public holiday. The actual day for International Women's
Day is the 8th of March, and is an event celebrated throughout
the world.
It
is a day to celebrate the achievements of women to date, a
day to gather together to inform, a day to protest and a day
to enjoy each other's company. To share wisdom and enjoy and
remember the world Sisterhood. Whatever activity is chosen
for this very special day, it is important to remember all
that has been achieved, and all there is to continue to do
to achieve much more.
It
is important that women take back their rightful place in
society, with their own feminine strengths, to bring back
the balance and bring their feminine powers to work along
side that of men. Even the United Nations have acknowledged
that bringing women into negotiations will bring solutions.
'Today
a central organizing principle of the work of the United Nations
is that no enduring solution to society's most threatening
social, economic and political problems can be found without
the full participation, and the full empowerment, of the world's
women.'

Text of Video Message:
The fight
for women’s rights is central to the UN’s global
mission.
Fifteen
years ago, in Beijing, Governments committed themselves to
equality, development and peace for all women, in all countries.
The Beijing
Declaration was a landmark on the road to women’s empowerment.
It
has guided policy making.
It has inspired
women and girls to strive for equality and opportunity, and
reminded everyone that this is their right.
We have
seen progress. Girls are now more likely to receive an education.
Women
are now more likely to run businesses or participate in government.
But much work remains.
Death
in childbirth is still too common. Too few women have access
to family planning. Violence against women remains a cause
of global shame, and sexual violence in war is endemic.
I have just appointed
a special representative to mobilize international action
to address these crimes.
At the United Nations
itself, we have more women in senior posts than at any time
in history.
Securing women’s
rights is central to all our hopes for peace, security and
sustainable development.
As we look back
on 15 years of achievement, let us look forward to a world
of equality and progress for all.
If
you want to learn more about International Women's Day, you

world doing some amazing things, joining together, not just
locally, but globally. Take some time out and take a look.
